Minaret of Jam faces natural threats; UNESCO calls for urgent protection

UNESCO has warned that the historic Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan’s Ghor Province remains at serious risk from natural hazards including floods riverbank erosion, and other environmental challenges. The monument requires sustained conservation efforts.

According to reports by UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre the minaret’s location at the confluence of the Hari River and the Jam River makes it vulnerable to seasonal flooding.

Severe flooding in 2019 also damaged the protective walls surrounding the historic monument.

Standing approximately 65 metres tall the Minaret of Jam is a remarkable example of Ghurid-era architecture.

It was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2002 and has been on the List of World Heritage in Danger since the same year.
