Suhail Shaheen, the Taliban’s ambassador to Qatar, has called for greater coordination between the Taliban government and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
He urged Roza Otunbayeva, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and head of UNAMA, to reflect the Taliban government’s achievements in her reports to the UN Security Council, in addition to the challenges.
This comes as relations between the Taliban government and the international community remain strained over issues including human rights, the formation of an inclusive government, and the fight against terrorism and narcotics.
Meanwhile, the Taliban government has called for sanctions against its officials to be lifted, Afghanistan’s frozen assets to be released, and the country’s seat at the United Nations to be handed over to its representative.
In contrast, the United Nations and several countries continue to emphasize respect for the rights of women and girls, inclusive political participation, and the implementation of commitments to combat terrorism.
